Troubleshooting
Plain-language fixes for the most common installation and launch problems.
Android
"App not installed" or the install stops
- The file may be incomplete. Delete it and download again, then verify the checksum.
- Free up storage; installation needs roughly 15 MB plus working space.
- If an older, differently signed build is installed, uninstall it first, then install the new file.
"For security, your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps"
Allow installation for the specific app you are installing from: open Settings → Apps → Special access → Install unknown apps, choose your browser or file manager, and allow it. Do not disable device security globally; you can turn the permission off again afterwards.
The app opens to a blank or broken page
- Force-stop the app and reopen it.
- Uninstall and reinstall the latest APK.
- Confirm your Android version is 8.0 or later.
Voice input does not work
Voice input uses the device's speech recogniser and requests the sa-IN locale. Availability depends on the device and its speech provider. Recognised text is placed in the search field for review and is never auto-searched. If a provider returns non-Devanagari text, the app says so — edit the text before searching, or use the built-in Devanagari keyboard instead.
Search finds nothing for a word I can see
Search normalises Devanagari and matches with punctuation-insensitivity, but preserves vowels, mātrās, virāma, anusvāra, visarga and candrabindu. Try a shorter form of the word, or a different spelling. Coverage of some works is partial because the source is raw OCR — see the release notes.
Windows
"Ramanuja could not start its web runtime — WebView2 Runtime is required"
The Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime is missing. The installer normally adds it. If it did not, install the runtime from Microsoft's WebView2 page and launch the app again. Windows 11 and most Windows 10 systems already include it.
Windows SmartScreen blocked the installer
The installer is not code-signed, so SmartScreen may warn. If — and only if — you downloaded it from this site and its checksum matched, choose More info → Run anyway. Otherwise, do not run it. Never disable SmartScreen globally.
The window opens but the page is blank
Confirm the app was not moved away from its Assets folder: the book files live in Ramanuja\Assets\ beside Ramanuja.exe. If Assets is missing, reinstall.
Devanagari shows as boxes
Windows 10 and 11 include the Nirmala UI Devanagari font. If it was removed, add the Devanagari language pack under Settings → Time & language → Language & region. The built-in keyboard still enters the correct characters even if a particular font is missing.
The Voice button does nothing useful
Expected: voice input is not implemented in the Windows release. Use the Devanagari keyboard or IAST transliteration in the Search page instead.
Uninstall left shortcuts behind
Re-run the uninstaller; if a shortcut is locked, remove it manually from the Start Menu or Desktop.
